Electric Iron

Image
Before the invention of the electric iron, various methods were used to smooth out washed and wrinkled clothes. Charcoal-filled pans were replaced by cast iron flat irons which were heated up in open fires in Ancient China. By the late nineteenth century, flat irons were being heated by a range of fuels including kerosene and animal oils. As this method was a tiring and dirty task as it involves continuous heating by a coal. But with the invention of electricity Henry W. Seely, an american inventor was the first to develop and patent an electric iron in 1882. The electric iron uses resistive heating. This was used to warm a metal hot plate which are now made of aluminium and stainless steel. The plate is attached to a handle to make it portable. Due to lack of technology it was difficult to control the temperature of the plate of irons. Seely and Richard Dyer made a cordless iron which became very popular. Around 1920s most of the homes had a electric iron which was fast and c

Ice Skate

The ice skate have been invented in Finland around 3000 B.C.E. As many ancient models have been found around Scandinavia and Russia the scientists were not sure where the skate originated. A news emerged in 2008 that people living in southern Finland benefited the most from ice skate on crude blades. Finland is known as 'The land of thousand lakes'. It is a cold land so each winter thousands of frozen lake reported a problem of transportation for the people. The first skates consists of leg bones of large animals. At the end of the bones holes were drilled off and strips of leather were used to tie the skates to the feet. As we need thin poles to propel ourselves, it was only in the fourteenth-century Holland that the poles were used with. The evolution of skates has passed through many changes such as metal attached to wood, metal attached to metal but the fundamental fact is that our balances is the most efficient thing that enables us to glide smoothly and effortless

Ancient Scissors

Image
The above picture is of a ancient scissor found as a fossil. These scissor date back around 1600 B.C. Spring-type scissors probably date from the Bronze age. They consist of blades and a C-shaped spring at the end of the handle. From 1500 B.C.E . This were used by Egyptians to cut silhouettes for artwork. Pivoted scissors were made of bronze and iron. They were used in ancient Rome and some parts of Asia. To facilitate large-scale mechanical production the styles of the scissors were simplified in the nineteenth century. The quality of scissors depend upon the steel used in them. The blades of the scissors were trimmed and hardened. Surgical and other specialized scissors were made of stainless steel. Cheaper scissors were made with softer steel. The higher carbon percentage in the steel used for scissors provide a harder cutting edge. Shears were made in same way as scissors.
