Ancient Scissors

The above picture is of a ancient scissor found as a fossil. These scissor date back around 1600 B.C.

Spring-type scissors probably date from the Bronze age. They consist of blades and a C-shaped spring at the end of the handle. From 1500 B.C.E. This were used by Egyptians to cut silhouettes for artwork. Pivoted scissors were made of bronze and iron. They were used in ancient Rome and some parts of Asia. To facilitate large-scale mechanical production the styles of the scissors were simplified in the nineteenth century. The quality of scissors depend upon the steel used in them. The blades of the scissors were trimmed and hardened. Surgical and other specialized scissors were made of stainless steel. Cheaper scissors were made with softer steel. The higher carbon percentage in the steel used for scissors provide a harder cutting edge. Shears were made in same way as scissors.
